Shea moisture hair coloring system Bright Auburn

In April, I decided that I wanted to dye my hair from a dark burgundy to a bright red. I was very nervous and skeptical because I had just dyed my hair a month prior. But I had read that the shea moisture hair coloring system wasn’t as drying as other products but I also noticed that the color didn’t take in many naturals hair.

I finally took matters into my own hands, when my plans were canceled and I was stuck in the house alone, the box of hair dye was just sitting there “waiting” for me to use it. lol So I just went ahead and opened up the box.

What’s in the Box?

It was very neatly packaged, definitely different than other brands I have used before.

The dye itself has

+ Certified organic ingredients, including: organic Shea butter, flaxseed oil & organic glycerin.

+ A soy protein is added to the formula of the dye which volumizes your hair by placing a protein patch where your hair is the weakest.

+ Linseed Oil, a natural preservative extracted from the Flaxseed, is used to protect the natural hair bristles of artist paint brushes, which are frequently washed

Inside the box there was Raw Shea Moisture Retention Shampoo, Raw Shea Restorative Conditioner and the Raw She Reconstructive Finishing Elixir.

Shea Moisture wanted to make sure that they gave you everything you would need to repair your hair after the process. The one thing that I noticed was that for 14.99 you are definitely getting what you deserve. You basically get a small sample kit when you purchase the dye that definitely last more than one use out of it.

My Experience and Method

Using the hair coloring system and reading other reviews prompted me to do things a tad bit differently. In order for my hair to take color it takes a lot longer than some to take color.  I didn’t prep my hair, I didn’t put oil in it the night before, nor did I use a base on my hair.

I parted my twa (teeny weeny afro) and applied to color straight from the bottle and I used my fingers to comb it through my hair. After I completed my entire head, I put on a shower cap and sat under a hooded dryer on low heat for 245 minutes. And the results that I got were amazing! The color was super bright and it took very well.

My Issues with it.

I faced a few issues with the hair coloring system, even though I washed it all out and used the shampoo and conditioner, my hair “bled” for a few weeks after every wash. Eventually the color faded, which is fine with me. My hair was also very dry no matter how many protein treatments and deep conditioning treatments I did. I am finally getting my hair back to it’s old moisture retention.

I would recommend it, but as always do your research before you use anything new in your hair!

  • Your color is very pretty as well. Thanks for the feedback, I’m going to dye my hair but scared to donor myself. Think ill go to a professional! Also good job on the site, you are such an inspiration.

  • I recently used the Shea Moisture Color & I am glad that I am not alone with the bleeding experience. Overall, the color results are wonderful. However, the continuos bleeding is a negative.

    • Yeah I definitely had an issue with my fingers turning red whenever I would flat twist my hair. But eventually the bleeding stopped. But the color (just like other hair dyes) started to fade and grow out.
